Geological Information
Ruby Zoisite, also called Anyolite, is a naturally occurring combination rock in which opaque red ruby corundum sits within green zoisite alongside black tschermakite hornblende. Zoisite is a sorosilicate, and the included ruby is corundum (aluminium oxide), giving the material a variable Mohs hardness of roughly 6 to 9 across its different minerals. The green comes from zoisite, the red from ruby, and the black from tschermakite, and the ruby content can show a faint red fluorescence under ultraviolet light. The name Anyolite derives from the Masai word for green, a genuine indigenous designation from the people of the region, where the material was commercially discovered in 1954. This is a natural, untreated combination. It is sourced primarily from the Longido district of Tanzania, with some material from Kenya.
