Geological Information
Ruby Zoisite, also called Anyolite from the Maasai word for green, is a naturally occurring combination rock of opaque red ruby corundum set in green zoisite with black tschermakite hornblende. The green comes from the zoisite, the red from the ruby, and the black from the hornblende, giving a variable hardness from around 6 for the zoisite up to 9 for the ruby. It was commercially discovered in 1954 and comes from the Longido district of Tanzania, with further material from Kenya.
