Palo Santo is the heartwood of Bursera graveolens, a tree native to the seasonally dry tropical forests of Ecuador, Peru, and Central America. Its golden to amber wood, marked with darker resinous veins running through the grain, comes only from naturally fallen branches and trunks, never live-harvested. The wood is left to age for four to ten years before use, a resting period believed necessary to develop its full aromatic potency, and its fragrance comes from natural compounds including limonene and cedrol held within the grain itself.
