Scolecite is a member of the zeolite group, a calcium aluminium silicate that crystallizes in the monoclinic system with a Mohs hardness of 5 to 5.5. Its white to colourless appearance comes from delicate, thin prismatic crystals that grow in radiating sprays and fan-shaped formations, a habit that makes raw specimens distinctive; tumbled pieces keep the pale colour while presenting a smooth, rounded surface. The mineral forms in cavities within basaltic rock and takes its name from the Greek skolex, meaning worm, a reference to its tendency to curl when heated. It carries no ancient lore and is primarily a modern collector and metaphysical stone. The principal commercial material comes from the Deccan Trap basalts of India, with the Pune district the main source of retail-quality Scolecite.
