The stone runs pale white to faintly grey, translucent enough that light entering one face carries visibly through the block, and the striations characteristic of Selenite show as fine parallel lines across the polish. The fine striations and silky lustre both derive from that fibrous structure. The name comes from Selene, the Greek moon goddess, referencing the stone's soft white luminosity.
