Geological Information
Selenite is a crystalline variety of gypsum, a hydrous calcium sulphate with a monoclinic structure and a Mohs hardness of 2-2.5. Its white to colourless appearance and silky lustre come from a fibrous, striated growth habit, formed where mineral-rich waters evaporate in sedimentary basins and deposit layers that consolidate into translucent masses. The name derives from Selene, the Greek goddess of the moon, in reference to that soft luminosity. Thin Selenite slabs were used as window material in ancient Mesopotamia and Rome before glass became widely available, and Mexico's Cave of the Crystals at Naica, discovered only in 2000, holds Selenite crystals exceeding 10 metres in length, among the largest mineral crystals ever recorded. Morocco is the primary commercial source, with further deposits in Mexico, the USA, Poland, and Australia.

Care Note
Selenite is water-soluble. Prolonged contact with water will permanently damage the surface, so keep the piece dry and never cleanse it in water. At Mohs 2-2.5 it is very soft and scratches easily, including with a fingernail, so store it apart from harder stones. Lift ash and residue with a dry, soft brush or cloth.
