Small internal cavities are visible on and just below the polished surface, appearing as fine open pockets that break the finish in places. Geological Information
Orange Calcite is calcium carbonate crystallizing in the trigonal system at a Mohs hardness of 3, making it one of the softer materials in regular decorative use. Its orange colouration comes from iron oxide and other trace impurities incorporated during deposition, and the intensity varies with how much iron was present in the forming solution. Calcite forms in massive beds where mineral-rich water deposits carbonate over long periods, and the small open cavities visible in many pieces are vugs, spaces left where crystal growth did not completely fill the available volume. Calcite is the defining mineral of the Mohs hardness scale at position 3 and is also notable for strong double refraction in its transparent varieties. Mexico is the primary commercial source, with additional material from Brazil and the United States. Orange Calcite is sensitive to acids and can be damaged by contact with household cleaning products or skincare products.
