Geological Information
Septarian is a sedimentary concretion rather than a single mineral, made up of calcite, aragonite and limestone, often with a chalcedony shell, at a Mohs hardness that varies from about 3.5 to 5 depending on the mineral present. It forms when mineral-rich mud gathers around an organic core on an ancient sea floor; as the nodule dries and shrinks it cracks internally, and those cracks, called septa from the Latin for a dividing wall, fill with yellow calcite and brown aragonite within a grey limestone matrix. It is often sold under the trade name Dragon Stone for its cracked, scale-like appearance. Documented sources include Madagascar, the primary source, along with Utah in the United States, Morocco, England, New Zealand and Canada.
