The Septarian Heart is a dark grey-brown stone split by vivid yellow veining that runs through it in a branching, cracked-open pattern. Those veins are wide and irregular, sometimes filling most of a face and sometimes threading thinly across it, so the contrast between the yellow and the surrounding matrix is what carries each piece. Geological Information
Septarian, often sold under the trade name Dragon Stone for its cracked, scale-like appearance, is a sedimentary concretion rather than a single mineral, composed of calcite, aragonite, and limestone, often within a chalcedony shell, with a hardness ranging from 3.5 to 5 depending on which mineral a given area contains. It forms when mineral-rich mud gathers around an organic core on an ancient sea floor; as the resulting nodule dries and shrinks it cracks internally, and those cracks, called septa from the Latin for dividing wall, fill with yellow calcite and brown aragonite within a grey limestone matrix. The yellow comes from the calcite, the brown from aragonite and iron staining, and the grey from the surrounding limestone or shell, all of it unaltered natural mineral content. Concretions have long drawn human interest as curiosities and folk thunderstones, though the crystal-market use is a modern development. Madagascar is the primary source, with additional material from Utah, Morocco, England, New Zealand, and Canada.
