Serpentine is a group of related magnesium silicate hydroxide minerals, monoclinic in system, with a Mohs hardness ranging from 3 to 5 depending on which member of the group dominates a given piece. Its colour ranges from pale yellow-green to deep forest green and is frequently mottled. The name comes from the material's resemblance to snakeskin, and Bowenite is the translucent gem variety. Serpentine is frequently used as a jade substitute and is sometimes sold as jade outright, which it is not. Although some serpentine deposits in nature may be associated with asbestos-forming minerals, polished Serpentine is widely used as an ornamental stone. The material is otherwise natural and requires no treatment. It was used in ancient China, Egypt, and across Mesoamerica as a green stone, though Maori pounamu is nephrite rather than serpentine despite both being green.
