Serpentine is not a single mineral but a group of related magnesium silicate hydroxide minerals, crystallising in the monoclinic system at a Mohs hardness of 3 to 5, with a green colour ranging from pale yellow-green to deep forest green and frequently mottled. It takes its name from its resemblance to snakeskin, and its translucent gem variety is known as bowenite. Serpentine has been used as a green ornamental stone in ancient China, Egypt, and across Mesoamerica, and it is frequently used as a jade substitute, though it should never be misrepresented as jade. Some serpentine deposits contain chrysotile, a form of asbestos, so retail material is confirmed as non-fibrous before sale.
