Serpentine is a group of related magnesium silicate hydroxide minerals rather than a single mineral, soft at about Mohs 3 to 5, with a green colour that ranges from pale yellow-green to deep forest green and is usually mottled. Named for its snakeskin appearance, it is frequently used as a jade substitute and must not be represented or sold as jade. Some serpentine sources contain chrysotile, a fibrous form of asbestos, so only confirmed non-fibrous material is suitable for retail; this material is offered as confirmed non-fibrous. It has a long history of decorative use in ancient China, Egypt and Mesoamerica. This material is sourced from China, with serpentine more broadly found in New Zealand, Italy, South Africa, Afghanistan and the USA.
