Product Description

The Shiva Lingam is a naturally ovoid stone, smoothed and rounded by river water into its elongated egg-like form. This two-tone variety shows a grey-to-brown body marked with the red-brown elliptical banding typical of the stone, and no two carry the same pattern. Each Shiva Lingam is dense and solid for its size, and sits steadily on its side or upended on its broader base.

The Shiva Lingam holds deep sacred meaning in Hindu tradition, representing Lord Shiva and the union of masculine and feminine principles, and stones of this kind are kept on altars and in temples and used in puja, or devotional practice. Beyond that living religious role, it is commonly linked with balance and harmony and with personal transformation, and is often kept as a focus for meditation or quiet contemplation. It suits a home altar or serves as a meaningful gift for someone who keeps the tradition.

Because the river alone shapes and marks these stones, each Shiva Lingam is one of a kind in its banding, its balance of grey and brown, and its exact proportions.

Geological Information
Shiva Lingam stones are crypto-crystalline quartz, a microcrystalline chalcedony and jasper carrying iron oxide banding (Mohs 7, trigonal system). Their grey-to-brown body and red-brown elliptical banding come from iron oxide within the quartz matrix. They are gathered by hand from the Narmada River in Madhya Pradesh, India, where the current wears them into their elongated ovoid shape over geological time; that form is entirely the work of the river, not machining or artificial shaping. The Narmada is one of the seven sacred rivers of Hinduism, and its yearly flood season is what makes collection possible, so every piece is unique in both banding and natural dimensions. Origin: India, the Narmada River, Madhya Pradesh.
