Their grey-to-brown body and red-brown elliptical banding come from iron oxide within the quartz matrix. They are gathered by hand from the Narmada River in Madhya Pradesh, India, where the current wears them into their elongated ovoid shape over geological time; that form is entirely the work of the river, not machining or artificial shaping.
