Geological Information
Chiastolite is a variety of the mineral andalusite, an aluminium silicate of the nesosilicate family (Mohs 7.5, orthorhombic), grey to brown with a naturally occurring black cross. The cross forms without human intervention as carbonaceous inclusions are pushed to the edges and corners of the growing crystal. It is untreated natural material. It has been found along the pilgrimage routes to Santiago de Compostela in Spain, where it was known as the cross stone or pilgrim's stone and carried by Christian pilgrims for centuries as a protective talisman, often picked up directly from the surface along the route. It is sourced from Spain, with additional material from China, Russia, the USA, and Australia.
