The Sodalite Heart is a deep royal blue stone veined with white calcite that runs through the body in irregular threads and patches. Geological Information
Sodalite is a sodium aluminium silicate chloride with a cubic crystal system and a Mohs hardness of 5.5 to 6. It is a feldspathoid rather than a true feldspar, a distinct mineral class that forms in silica-poor conditions. The blue colour comes from sulphur and iron impurities, and the white calcite veining that threads through it is characteristic of the material rather than a defect. Sodalite is routinely confused with lapis lazuli, but it lacks lapis's gold pyrite flecking and shows a more uniform blue broken by white veins rather than lapis's deeper blue with gold. The material is natural and requires no treatment. Hackmanite is the tenebrescent variety, shifting from white or grey to violet under UV light and returning in darkness, and the large Princess Sodalite deposit in Ontario was named during a royal visit in 1891.
