Geological Information
Sodalite is a feldspathoid mineral, a sodium aluminium silicate chloride crystallizing in the cubic system with a Mohs hardness of 5.5 to 6, technically distinct from true feldspar despite the visual similarity. Its blue colour comes from sulphur and iron impurities, and its characteristic white calcite veining runs throughout most specimens. Sodalite is frequently confused with lapis lazuli, but it lacks lapis's gold pyrite flecks and instead shows a more uniform blue with white veining rather than lapis's deep blue with gold. A notable deposit known as Princess Sodalite was discovered in Ontario, Canada, in 1891 during a royal visit and named after Princess Margaret. A tenebrescent variety called hackmanite changes colour from white or grey to violet under UV exposure and reverts in darkness. Sources include Brazil, Canada, Namibia, India, and Russia.
