Amethyst Ring with Fine Druse on Metal Stand Specimen - 24 inch

This Amethyst specimen is a large geode ring, a full slice cut through the geode, lined with fine druzy amethyst crystals and mounted upright on a metal stand. The purple crystal band runs around the open centre in colour from pale lilac to deep violet, with the stand holding the piece so the druse faces out. At 24 inches it is a substantial statement specimen.

Amethyst is a member of the Quartz family, silicon dioxide with a Mohs hardness of 7 and a trigonal system; its purple to violet colour comes from iron impurities and natural irradiation within the crystal lattice, ranging from pale lilac to deep royal purple. It forms as prismatic hexagonal crystals lining geodes and vugs, as seen in this druse-lined ring. It is a natural material, though pale amethyst is sometimes irradiated to deepen colour and heat treatment can shift it to citrine tones. Named from the Ancient Greek amethystos (not drunk), it was worn across Greek and Roman cultures as a talisman against intoxication and used extensively in royal and ecclesiastical jewellery.
