This Specimen is a natural intergrowth of Amethyst and Agate, both silicon dioxide members of the quartz family with a hardness of 7. The Agate host formed as banded chalcedony deposited in a cavity, while the Amethyst druse crystallised as prismatic purple crystals lining the same cavity, its colour produced by iron and natural irradiation within the lattice. Uruguay is one of the classic sources for this Amethyst-and-agate material, producing dark agate bodies with richly coloured crystal pockets, and it remains the stated origin for this piece.
