Fluorite is calcium fluoride, a halide mineral that crystallises in the cubic system at a Mohs hardness of 4, the mineral that defines that point on the hardness scale, with perfect octahedral cleavage in four directions. Its colour, here green, comes from trace impurities and natural irradiation acting on the crystal during growth. The word fluorescence derives from Fluorite, as it was the first mineral observed to glow under ultraviolet light, and this material fluoresces under UV. The accompanying Quartz is silicon dioxide at a Mohs hardness of 7, one of the most abundant minerals on Earth. Commercial Fluorite comes chiefly from China, the source of this specimen, with further deposits in Mexico, South Africa and England's Derbyshire, while Quartz is found worldwide.
