Geological Information
Malachite is a copper carbonate hydroxide (Mohs 3.5-4, monoclinic system) that produces some of the most vivid greens in the mineral world, its colour coming entirely from copper. The characteristic banding, alternating light and dark green, is formed by rhythmic precipitation of copper carbonate during formation. It was ground and used as green eye pigment in ancient Egypt, and the Malachite Room in the Winter Palace in St Petersburg remains one of the most spectacular examples of decorative mineral use in history. Principal sources include the Democratic Republic of Congo and Zambia, along with Russia, Australia, the USA and Israel.
