Petrified Wood is a silicified fossil, a silicon dioxide pseudomorph with a Mohs hardness of 7 and a trigonal crystal system, formed when ancient wood is gradually replaced by silica molecule by molecule while preserving the original cellular structure, a process that occurs over millions of years in silica-rich groundwater. The preserved grain and ring patterns are physically verifiable and wrap around the polished sphere, and the material has been recognised across many cultures as a connection to ancient time, held sacred in Native American traditions of the Southwest as material connected to ancestors and deep time. The Arizona Petrified Forest contains trees from the Triassic period, approximately 225 million years old. Its origin is Madagascar.
