Rose Quartz is the pink variety of the Quartz family (silicon dioxide, Mohs 7, trigonal system). Its colour comes from trace titanium, iron or manganese, or from microscopic pink fibre inclusions of dumortierite or similar minerals; massive Rose Quartz such as this is coloured by those fibres, while clear crystal Rose Quartz is rarer and coloured by trace elements. Oriented fibre inclusions can produce a six-rayed star, or asterism, in Star Rose Quartz cut as a cabochon. The stone holds one of the strongest historical love associations in the trade, documented as a love token in ancient Egypt and Rome. Principal sources include Madagascar, along with Brazil, India, South Africa and the USA.
