Selenite is a crystalline variety of gypsum, a calcium sulfate mineral, prized for its soft white to colourless tone and fine fibrous, silky lustre. The name derives from Selene, the Greek goddess of the moon, referencing its gentle luminosity. Mexico's Cave of the Crystals in Naica, discovered in 2000, contains selenite crystals exceeding 10 metres in length, among the largest mineral crystals ever recorded. Thin selenite slabs were historically used as window material in ancient Mesopotamia and Rome before glass became widely available. No treatment is applied; this is a natural material. Selenite is water-soluble, and prolonged exposure to water will permanently damage the surface, so it should be kept dry.
