Geological Information
Amethyst is the purple variety of quartz, silicon dioxide with a trigonal crystal system and a Mohs hardness of 7. Its colour comes from iron impurities combined with natural irradiation within the crystal lattice, and intensity ranges from palest lilac to deep royal purple, often banded within a single piece as it is here. It forms as prismatic hexagonal crystals lining geodes, vugs, and alluvial deposits. Heating above roughly 470°C shifts the colour to yellow or orange, and material treated that way is sold commercially as citrine or prasiolite. Zambian Amethyst is noted for exceptional clarity and a distinctive blue-violet secondary hue. Deposits are worked in Brazil, Uruguay, Zambia, Madagascar, Russia, South Korea, and Canada.
