The Stichtite Heart is a soft lilac to deep purple stone with a waxy, almost soapy surface quality quite unlike the glassy finish harder stones take. Paler and darker zones mottle through the body, and occasional green patches show where serpentine occurs alongside it. The Heart is small and light in the hand. Colour depth varies considerably from piece to piece, running from pale mauve through to a rich plum.

Stichtite is traditionally associated with love and compassion, with a reputation built around emotional openness rather than protection. A secondary association with calm and stress relief supports that gentler reading. Geological Information
Stichtite is a magnesium chromium carbonate hydroxide, trigonal in system, with a Mohs hardness of only 1.5 to 2, placing it among the very softest minerals worked for retail. The lilac to purple colouration comes from its chromium content, which is unusual: chromium more commonly produces green, as it does in emerald and fuchsite, and the purple here results from the specific carbonate structure the chromium sits within. Stichtite forms through the alteration of chromium-bearing serpentine, which is why the two are so often found intergrown, and material combining purple stichtite with green serpentine is traded as Atlantisite. The mineral was first described in Tasmania in 1910 and named after Robert Sticht, a metallurgist who managed the mine where it was identified. The material is natural and requires no treatment. Australia and South Africa are the principal sources.
