Stichtite is a hydrated magnesium chromium carbonate, crystallizing in the trigonal system with a Mohs hardness of only 1.5-2, among the softest stones used ornamentally. Its lilac to rose-pink to purple colouring comes from chromium content within its structure, and it typically forms as fibrous to platy aggregates or crusts rather than large individual crystals, often found in close association with serpentine and chromite. First discovered in Tasmania in 1910 and formally recognized as a distinct mineral species in 1914, it is a genuinely rare mineral documented at only a small number of localities worldwide. When naturally intergrown with serpentine, the material is sold separately under the trade name Atlantisite. Primary sources include Tasmania, with additional documented occurrences in South Africa, Brazil, Canada, Russia, Zimbabwe, and India.
