Tarot of the Abyss

Tarot of the Abyss is drawn by Ana Tourian in dense black and white, with heavy shadow, engraved-looking texture and figures that emerge from darkness rather than sitting against it. Tourian works as an artist, illustrator and art director, and has made several internationally recognised tarot and oracle decks. A substantial guidebook accompanies the set.

The deck is built to trace a movement from formlessness toward order, and the Minor Arcana carries as much of that weight as the Major, which is unusual and rewards reading the pips as seriously as the trumps. Two alternate cards are supplied alongside the standard seventy-eight, so a reader can substitute where an image does not sit right for them and keep the deck personally coherent. Working in one ink means nothing is emphasised by colour and the structure has to be found in the drawing itself. It suits a reader who wants a deck with a stated arc rather than a neutral tool.
