The Herbal Tarot

The Herbal Tarot pairs every card with a single medicinal herb, pictured and named on the face alongside the traditional scene. Candice Cantin drew the deck under the direction of herbalist Michael Tierra, and the colour is strong and clear, with the plant given enough space on each card to be identified rather than merely decorative. A booklet sets out the pairings.

The herb assignments follow intuitive, astrological and energetic reasoning rather than a single fixed scheme, which means a card can be read in the usual way or through the plant standing on it. For anyone working with herbs, that turns a spread into something closer to a materia medica in motion: the reading suggests not just a situation but a physical thing to make tea from. Traditional Rider-Waite assignments sit underneath, so a reader arriving with ordinary Tarot knowledge loses nothing and simply gains a second vocabulary running in parallel.
