The Hematite Heart is a dark steel-grey to near-black stone with a hard metallic reflectiveness closer to polished metal than to stone. The surface throws back light in a tight bright band and shows no internal structure at all. The Heart is a comfortable hand size but strikingly heavy for it, dense enough that the weight registers immediately on picking one up. Natural surface features and slight variations in polish and tone occur from piece to piece.

Geological Information
Hematite is iron oxide, Fe2O3, crystallising in the trigonal system at a Mohs hardness of 5.5 to 6.5, the same mineral responsible for the colour of red rocks, rust, and red ochre. Its name comes from the Greek haema, meaning blood, after the red-brown streak it leaves when scratched across an unglazed surface, which remains the most reliable field identification despite the polished stone reading metallic silver-grey. That contrast between a red streak and a metallic body is a function of particle size rather than any inconsistency in the mineral. The material is natural and non-magnetic; magnetic material sold as hematite, sometimes called Hematine or marketed as Magnetite, is a man-made sintered product and a different thing entirely. Red ochre from hematite has been found at archaeological sites over 100,000 years old, ancient Egyptians used polished hematite as a mirror, and Roman gladiators reputedly rubbed it over their bodies before combat.
