Geological Information
Tiger Eye is a chalcedony variety of quartz, formed as a silicon dioxide pseudomorph after crocidolite, with a Mohs hardness of 7. Its golden-brown bands and silky cat's-eye sheen, called chatoyancy, arise as silica replaces parallel crocidolite fibres while keeping their alignment, so light reflecting along the fibres produces the moving band. That replacement is complete, leaving the fibres fully converted to silica, so Tiger Eye is safe to handle. Roman soldiers reputedly carried it as a protective talisman.
