Geological Information
Tiger Eye is a chalcedony variety within the quartz family, silicon dioxide at a Mohs hardness of 7. Its golden brown colouring comes from iron oxide, and the moving band of light known as chatoyancy is produced by the parallel fibrous structure the stone inherits from its formation. The material begins as crocidolite, a fibrous amphibole, which is progressively replaced by silica while the original fibre alignment is preserved; this replacement process is complete in finished material, with the crocidolite fibres fully converted to quartz, so the stone is safe to handle. Cutting the stone across the fibre direction is what produces the strongest sheen, and lapidaries orient the rough deliberately for this reason. South Africa is the primary source, particularly the Northern Cape, with additional material from India, Australia, the United States and Brazil.
