Geological Information
Trolleite is a rare aluminium phosphate hydroxide mineral, crystallising in the monoclinic system at a Mohs hardness of 5.5 to 6, found primarily in metamorphic rocks. The Brazilian material is typically intergrown with quartz, which creates the distinctive blue-grey and white matrix seen in polished pieces, and its blue colouration comes from the aluminium phosphate mineral structure. It is named after the Swedish chemist Hans Gabriel Trolle-Wachtmeister and is genuinely rare compared with most commercially available crystals; the Minas Gerais deposit in Brazil, the source of this material, is essentially the sole source of lapidary-quality Trolleite, which entered the wider crystal market only from around 2020.
