Geological Information
Ametrine is a naturally bicoloured quartz, silicon dioxide with a hardness of 7, in which purple amethyst and yellow citrine colour zones occur within the same crystal. The two colours arise from temperature variation during formation affecting the oxidation state of trace iron in different growth sectors, and natural material shows a gradual transition between the zones. It comes almost exclusively from the Anahi mine in Bolivia, which has been worked since the seventeenth century and remains the world's primary commercial source.
