Geological Information
Dumortierite is an aluminium borosilicate mineral of the orthorhombic system with a hardness of 7 to 8.5, typically occurring in massive form with a silky to vitreous lustre. Its deep blue to violet-blue colour comes from iron content, and it is often found intergrown with quartz, sold in that form as dumortierite quartz. It was named after the French palaeontologist Eugène Dumortier. The material is sourced chiefly from Brazil, Namibia, and Madagascar, with further deposits in France, the United States, and Austria.
