Geological Information
Fluorite is a halide mineral, calcium fluoride, crystallising in the cubic system and defining the midpoint of the Mohs scale at hardness 4. Its wide range of purple, green, blue, yellow, and clear colours comes from trace impurities, rare earth elements, and natural irradiation, with banding reflecting successive growth phases. It has perfect octahedral cleavage in four directions and can split cleanly if struck, and it was the first mineral observed to fluoresce under ultraviolet light, giving fluorescence its name. Roman murrhine vessels were carved from fluorite, and English Blue John from Derbyshire has been mined for over 300 years. The material is sourced chiefly from China, with further deposits in Mexico, the United States, and the United Kingdom.
