Geological Information
Ocean Jasper is a spherulitic rhyolite, a silica-rich volcanic rock rather than a true chalcedony jasper, with a hardness of 6.5 to 7. Its circular orbital patterns form by radial crystal growth within the rock, and some colour zones fluoresce under ultraviolet light. It comes from a genuinely limited source, the coastal cliffs near Marovato on the Madagascar coast, reachable only by boat at certain tides, and was first brought to market in the late 1990s. All Ocean Jasper originates from that single Madagascan coastline.
