Geological Information
Rainbow Moonstone is sold universally under this trade name but is technically a white labradorite, a plagioclase feldspar rather than a true orthoclase moonstone, with a hardness of 6 to 6.5. Its vivid blue-white flash, called adularescence, is caused by light diffraction between fine lamellar layers of albite and orthoclase within the stone, and it is typically stronger and more vivid than the sheen of traditional cream moonstone. It carries the same lunar associations as classic moonstone. India is the primary source, with further material from Sri Lanka and Madagascar.
