Rhodochrosite is a manganese carbonate mineral of the trigonal system with a Mohs hardness of 3.5 to 4, producing vivid pink-to-rose-red colours from its manganese content. Its distinctive concentric pink and white banding is one of the most recognisable patterns in retail crystals, and its name derives from the Greek rhodon, meaning rose, and chros, meaning colour. Argentine material deposited in ancient Inca silver mines is among the most prized; the Incas called it Inca Rose, believing it to be the blood of former rulers turned to stone.
