Ruby is the red variety of corundum, aluminium oxide, with a Mohs hardness of 9 and a trigonal crystal system, making it the second hardest natural mineral after diamond; only chromium-bearing red corundum is a ruby, with the red colour coming from chromium impurities. Heat treatment is near-universal in commercial rubies, as heating improves clarity and colour and is an accepted industry standard, while lead-glass filling is used in low-grade material and synthetic ruby has been produced since the early 20th century; all of these must be disclosed, and disclosure of treatment level matters for value.
