Ruby is the red variety of corundum, an aluminium oxide, coloured red by chromium; only chromium-bearing red corundum qualifies as Ruby, while other colours are sapphire. At Mohs 9 it is the second-hardest natural mineral after diamond. One of the four classical precious gemstones, Ruby was used as a talisman of warriors and kings across ancient Burma, India, Thailand, and China, and appears in crown jewels worldwide. Ruby is sourced from Myanmar, historically the finest, along with Madagascar, Mozambique, Sri Lanka, Thailand, and Vietnam.
