Thousand Layers is a Chinese trade name for a finely banded sedimentary stone, typically a tightly banded limestone or chalcedony, in which the layers are so fine and numerous that the cross-section shows an extraordinary density of thin bands, giving a Mohs hardness that varies from about 3 to 7 depending on composition. The material reflects extremely slow, cyclical mineral deposition over geological time, with each visible layer recording a separate deposition event, and the colour variation in cream, beige, tan, and soft brown reflects differences in mineral content during formation.
