Geological Information
Blue Tiger Eye is a chalcedony variety from the quartz family, silicon dioxide, with a Mohs hardness of 7 and a trigonal crystal system, formed as a pseudomorph after crocidolite. Its blue colouring comes from the crocidolite fibres, and the parallel fibrous structure produces the chatoyancy, the silky cat's eye effect; the material is also called Hawk's Eye. The asbestos-replacement process is complete, so the crocidolite fibres are fully replaced by silica and the material is safe to handle. Tiger Eye was worn by Roman soldiers as a protective talisman and used in traditional practices across parts of Asia and Africa. Principal sources include South Africa, India, Australia, the United States, and Brazil.
