Rainbow Tourmaline refers to mixed tourmaline material showing multiple colours in a single lot, combining elbaite in pink, green, and blue, black schorl, and other varieties of the tourmaline group, a complex boron silicate with a hardness of 7 to 7.5. The diverse colours arise from different trace elements within the same crystal structure: iron for blue-black, manganese for pink-red, and chromium for green. Tourmaline has been traded since at least the sixteenth century, when Portuguese sailors brought coloured stones from Sri Lanka and Brazil to Europe. Brazil is the primary source, with further material from Afghanistan and Mozambique.
