Geological Information
Tree Agate is a chalcedony variety of the quartz family, silicon dioxide of the trigonal system at a Mohs hardness of 7. Its opaque white body carries green dendritic inclusions of chlorite or celadonite, giving a strong resemblance to a tree or branch silhouette. It is often confused with Moss Agate, the distinction being that Tree Agate is opaque white with green inclusions while Moss Agate is translucent with variable inclusion colours; Tree Agate is also sometimes sold as White Moss Agate. The inclusions are mineral matter rather than organic plant material. Indian lapidary tradition has long worked Tree Agate, and the stone's nature and growth associations are among the most consistent in the agate family. This material is sourced primarily from India, with further deposits in Brazil and the USA.
