Amethyst is the purple variety of quartz, silicon dioxide at Mohs 7, its colour ranging from palest lilac to deep royal purple from iron impurities and natural irradiation within the crystal lattice. Heat treatment above roughly 470 degrees Celsius shifts the colour to yellow or orange, producing material sold commercially as citrine or prasiolite, and some pale amethyst is irradiated to deepen the colour, both disclosed where known. Amethyst is one of the most consistently documented gemstones across Greek, Roman, Egyptian and Christian traditions, its name from the Greek amethystos, referring to a belief that it guarded against intoxication. It is sourced from Brazil, Uruguay, Zambia, Madagascar, Russia, South Korea and Canada.
