Tiger Calcite is a banded calcium carbonate with alternating iron-rich and iron-poor layers, crystallizing in the trigonal system and soft at a Mohs hardness of 3. The warm yellow, brown and cream banding comes from iron oxide layering within the calcite matrix and resembles tiger-stripe markings. The banding mechanism is similar to that of banded agates, but it occurs in a calcite rather than a silica matrix. There is no single ancient tradition under this name, which is a modern retail designation, though banded calcite with warm earth tones has been worked decoratively in Mesoamerican and other traditions. Its tiger-stripe associations parallel those of Tiger Eye, leaning toward strength and solar energy. This material is sourced primarily from Mexico, with further deposits in the USA.
