Geological Information
Carnelian is a chalcedony variety of the quartz family, silicon dioxide with a Mohs hardness of 7, coloured orange to red-orange by iron oxide. It is one of the oldest continuously used gemstones, worked in ancient Egypt, Mesopotamia, Greece and Rome for seals and amulets, found in Tutankhamun's tomb, and named among the twelve stones of the Hebrew High Priest's breastplate; it was favoured for seals because wax does not stick to it. Heat treatment is common and standard, since natural carnelian tends brownish and heat brings out the vivid red-orange, and some material on the market is dyed agate; disclosure applies where known. It is sourced from India, with further material from Brazil, Madagascar, Uruguay and Germany.
