Geological Information
Carnelian is a chalcedony variety in the quartz family, silicon dioxide at Mohs 7, its orange to red-orange colour from iron oxide impurities, ranging from pale peach to deep blood orange. Heat treatment is common and standard practice, as natural carnelian tends toward brownish orange and heating produces the vivid red-orange the stone is known for; some material is dyed agate, which can be told apart because genuine carnelian shows cloudy colour distribution against the light while dyed agate shows colour concentrated along bands. It is one of the oldest continuously used gemstones, chosen for seals because wax does not stick to it, and was used in ancient Egypt, Mesopotamia, Greece and Rome, found in Tutankhamun's tomb and counted among the twelve stones of the Hebrew High Priest's breastplate.
