Citrine is the yellow to orange-brown variety of quartz, silicon dioxide at Mohs 7, its name taken from the French citron, meaning lemon. Natural citrine is relatively rare and typically pale yellow to honey or champagne; the majority of commercial citrine is heat-treated amethyst or smoky quartz, where temperatures above roughly 470 degrees Celsius shift purple and grey tones to yellow and orange. This heating is a long-accepted industry practice, and deep orange to burnt-amber colours almost always indicate heated material. Ametrine from Bolivia's Anahi mine is one of the few guaranteed natural citrine-bearing materials. Across European and Asian trading traditions citrine is known as the merchant's stone, carried in purses and cash registers for centuries as an abundance talisman. It is sourced from Brazil, Uruguay, Madagascar, Spain, Russia, Scotland and the USA.
