Fluorite is calcium fluoride (CaF2), a halide mineral that crystallises in the cubic system, and it is the defining mineral for Mohs hardness 4. Its wide colour range comes from trace impurities and natural irradiation affecting the crystal during growth, with banding reflecting successive growth phases. The word fluorescence is derived from fluorite, which was the first mineral observed to glow under ultraviolet light. It has a long ornamental history: Roman murrhine vessels carved from fluorite were among the most prized luxury objects of the ancient world, and English Blue John fluorite from Derbyshire has been mined for over 300 years. Dyed fluorite exists, and artificially enhanced colour tends to be more uniformly saturated and to lack natural zoning; this material is sold as natural. It is sourced primarily from China, with further material from Mexico, South Africa, the USA, the UK and Germany.
